The Principal’s Challenge and the PTA
It is common knowledge that the students who excel have parents who are involved in their education. Oyster Bay-East Norwich is very fortunate to have an active and engaged PTA.
The OBEN PTA’s are fantastic resources for parents in the community who want to give their children an enriched education. The PTA supports many fundraising events throughout the year to bring programs and sponsor educational events throughout the District.
Most recently, the PTA brought the PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) program to the Roosevelt Elementary School. This season’s PARP program “Catch a Dragon by the Tale”, promoted imagination and wonder. School administrators and faculty kicked things off with “Read Across America.” The PTA parents decorated the cafeteria hallway and held a “Read-in.”
It is now a tradition at the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School for the principal to challenge her students to read during the PARP celebration period. If the students meet the challenge after logging their time reading, then the principal will do something in front of the entire school. In the past the principal has walked the plank during a pirate themed PARP or kissed a horseshoe crab during last year’s “Books by the Bay” themed PARP.
This year, Principal Tami McElwee challenged the students to fill their PARP reading log sheets. The students gladly read all month and met the challenge.
Principal McElwee puckered up once again this year to kiss a dragon. The live Bearded Dragon came to school courtesy of the Megaris family whose daughter, Alexandra is a kindergarten student.
What a fantastic month of learning, education and fun for the entire family. Parents who want the best for their children should join the PTA. The OBEN PTA’s are a group of caring and compassionate people that are an inspiration to be around.

Please, note that the ‘S’ in PTSA stands for “Student.” High School students are encouraged to join the PTSA and help make a difference in their own education.
