Continued from cover
New to the Varsity Cheerleading Team, junior Sydney Munoz has demonstrated great potential as a flyer and a base, according to Coach Chelsea Bressingham. “She pushes herself and her teammates every practice to be the best they can be,” Coach Bressingham said. “Her positive attitude and determination is a perfect example of what it means to be a team player. She has improved tremendously since her first day in tumbling and stunting, and continues to push herself to be the best cheerleader she can be.”
Finishing second in B Finals in two boats in States, Senior Steven Mushorn was named Athlete of the Month for Varsity Boy’s Crew. A four-year varsity crew athlete in his sixth season, “Steven is an inspirational leader to his crew mates and also the novices and middle schoolers who look to him for support and encouragement,” said Coach Kathy Brown.
Girls’ Varsity Cross Country athlete Hannah Lopes has been a cornerstone of the team since she joined the varsity team as an 8th grader in 2014, according to Coach Kevin Cotter and assistant Coach Bradley Rangell. This year, she has led her “very small” team, nicknamed the "Spartan 6," to an undefeated conference record of 13-0. She also, once again, achieved All-Conference status by running a 5k under the qualifying time of 23:10.
“Hannah has been a loyal member of the running community,” Coach Cotter said. “She has been a leader on the cross country, winter and spring track teams, rarely misses a day of practice, and always works to improve. From being a mentor to the younger athletes to ensuring her teammates have a ride home every day, Hannah is a true leader and exemplifies excellence in so many ways.”
Freshman Meghan Cox has been an “outstanding addition to the Varsity Field Hockey Team,” according to Coach Lauren Scripture and Assistant Coach Bridget Lincoln. Meghan is a freshman goalie, considered one of the most demanding positions. “Meghan has kept the team in many games this season with her incredible saves and determination,” Coach Scripture said. “She currently has 94 saves and 2 shutouts, and has also received many compliments from the officials. Meghan never gives up and is always working hard to help her teammates.”
Sophomore Helen Grassi is Athlete of the Month for Girls’ Varsity Soccer. Helen plays both sweeper and center midfield for the team, and has “constant enthusiasm and diligence throughout the game,” according to Coach Nicole Schwartz and Assistant Coach Chris Borer. On the defensive end, Helen helps distribute the ball, as well as communicate positioning to her teammates.
“The team could always count on Helen to step up and fight for the ball,” Coach Schwartz said. “She wins possession both on the ground and in the air, helping her team thrive. As a center midfielder, Helen becomes the hub, distributing beautiful passes and taking powerful shots on goal. The Girls’ Soccer Team is lucky to have such a charismatic, motivated, and talented player as Helen Grassi on its team.”
Senior Captain Jessica Layne was named Athlete of the Month of the Varsity Tennis Team. According to Coach Greg Bilello, Jessica is a six-year singles varsity starter for Oyster Bay and has been a first singles starter for the past two years. Jessica has compiled a season record of 14-0 and recently represented Oyster Bay at the Nassau County Individual Singles Tournament.
Congratulations, athletes!
